Sustainable Tourism: How to Enjoy Wildlife without Harming It

I could remember my first time taking EWM 201; the first semester, 200 level. that was the first time I heard the word "Sustainable Tourism". Sustainable tourism is the practice of traveling to destinations by conserving the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting the welfare of wildlife.

Take note of the emphasized words, the basis of this blog content is to promote the welfare of wildlife. tourism is known to have an impact on the environment which includes wildlife and the local communities surrounding the wildlife resources. this can have both positive and negative impacts. While tourism can bring much-needed income to local communities and raise awareness about conservation, it can also disrupt wildlife habitats and sabotage animal behavior.

So, how can you enjoy wildlife without harming them? The first step is to research your destination and choose a tour operator that is committed to sustainable tourism practices. Look for tour operators that have been certified by reputable organizations, such as the International Ecotourism Society or Sustainable Travel International. These organizations have strict standards for sustainable tourism that operators must meet in order to be certified. Also you can reach out to local operators in your site of attraction. When it comes to local tour guides in Nigeria, I can recommend Scenic tours and Keziah Tours and Events

When you're out in the field, be mindful of your impact on the environment and wildlife. Stick to designated trails and viewing areas, and avoid disturbing wildlife by getting too close or making too much noise. Don't wear red clothes while going on game viewing, they dislike anything RED. Do not use body spray or deodorants so that you won't cause them to run away or towards you. Some chemicals affect their breathing while they get attracted to some. remember that insects are parts of wildlife, animals are wild and unpredictable, so always be prepared for unexpected encounters.

In addition, it's important to be respectful of the culture and customs of local communities. you might get to some destinations and find out that they dress unclad, don't use it as an opportunity to molest them, rather appreciate their culture. Support local businesses, such as hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops, and be mindful of your impact on the local environment. you might find yourself in a more remote area, feel free to associate with them and give it a try to sleep with them till daybreak, the experience would be there forever.

Another important aspect of sustainable tourism is supporting conservation efforts. Many tour operators donate a portion of their profits to conservation organizations, like sponsoring a beach clean up, providing learning and education materials to rural schools, and so on. So consider choosing a tour operator that supports conservation efforts in the area you plan to visit.

Finally, you can also take steps to reduce your own carbon footprint while traveling. This can include choosing more sustainable forms of transportation, such as trains or buses, rather than planes, riding on horses or camels to reduce CO2 emissions, and staying in eco-friendly accommodations.

In conclusion, sustainable tourism is essential for protecting wildlife and the environment. By choosing a sustainable tour operator, being mindful of your impact on the environment and wildlife, supporting local communities, and supporting conservation efforts, you can enjoy wildlife without harming it. By taking these small steps, we can ensure that future generations will be able to experience the wonders of wildlife as well.

Remember this always,

KILL NOTHING BUT TIME, TAKE NOTHING BUT PHOTOGRAPHS, AND LEAVE NOTHING BUT FOOTPRINTS
